Giving Back: Flavor Waves and UpSpring introduce underprivileged children to windsurfing

Updated: Feb 11, 2021

Language is no barrier for sharing the stoke of windsurfing with kids everywhere!

In 2019, when traveling was still not affected by the Covid-19 virus, Flavor Waves partnered with UpSpring.org to make a young girl's dream come true by learning to #windsurf with local kids in La Ventana, Mexico.

UpSpring is a #non-profit based out of Cincinnati. The place where founder of Flavor Waves, Mike Abrams, is originally from. Giving back to children in need is a common thread that has always maintained close to Mike's heart as #FlavorWaves has continued to grow.

The mission of UpSpring is to empower children experiencing homelessness in Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky by providing opportunities through education and enrichment. Finding UpSpring was a perfect match for combining Mike's love for windsurfing, and doing something great for his hometown community, as well as underprivileged children in Mexico.

"Giving back is a central focus for us at Flavor Waves. We couldn't be happier to get the opportunity to share the love of windsurfing and provide unforgettable experiences to children who normally don't have access to an adventure like this..."

As you can imagine, for a young girl flying from Ohio to the small town of La Ventana in Baja California Sur near the tip of the Baja Peninsula was a big change. The beautiful turquoise ocean, the natural scenery and a glimpse into an entirely different lifestyle on the beach was so refreshing. She was ready to hit the beach right away!

The kids couldn't wait to jump in the warm water and try their first ocean sport, windsurfing. Other children from the local town joined in the fun and there was plenty of gear to go around. With the help of #ProWindsurfer Federico Morisio who joined Flavor Waves to put together this windsurf experience, the kids were in great hands for their first lesson on the water.

After the first day of instruction on the beach followed by learning water-starts, the kids were hooked! The days were filled with smiles, laughs, amazing Mexican meals, and so much time in the water it was hard to get them to come back in. The memories made on the trip to La Ventana will be cherished and remembered for many years.

Flavor Waves can't wait to be able to #contribute to causes like this again in the future and are alway looking for non-profits that we can partner with to create amazing #experiences and give back to children in need. If you would like to learn more about our upcoming partnerships or would like to partner with us, please contact us! We would love to hear from you.
